Frequently asked questions
About Teach For Uzbekistan
What is Teach For Uzbekistan?
Teach For Uzbekistan is a nonprofit organization that recruits, trains, and places outstanding university graduates and young professionals as teachers in underserved schools across Uzbekistan, through a two-year Fellowship. We are a partner of the global Teach For All network.
Is TFU a government program?
No. TFU is an independent nonprofit that works in partnership with the Ministry of Preschool and School Education under a formal Memorandum of Understanding. Our program is designed to complement, not replace, the state education system — Fellows teach in public schools under the direction of school administrators, in full alignment with national education standards.
How is TFU funded?
Through a diversified base of partners and donors, including corporate partners, international foundations, and individual philanthropists — alongside institutional support from government partners.
How can I support TFU if I’m not applying as a Fellow?
You can partner with us as an organization, donate, or follow our work on social media.
About the Fellowship program
Who can become a Fellow?
We look for motivated, capable young people with leadership potential — not necessarily a teaching background. What matters most is character, motivation, personal responsibility, and alignment with our values, evaluated alongside subject knowledge and communication skills.
Do I need a teaching degree or prior teaching experience?
No. Many Fellows come from fields outside education. We provide full pedagogical training through the Fellowship and Summer Institute before placement. Fellows must have at least a bachelor’s degree.
What subjects do Fellows teach?
Priority subjects include mathematics, sciences (biology, chemistry, physics), English, and IT/computer science — based on where partner schools have the greatest need.
When can I apply for the next Fellowship?
Applications for the 2027–2029 Fellowship open on 15 October 2026 and close on 30 April 2027.
How competitive is the process?
Very — recent cycles have drawn well over a thousand applications for a limited number of spots, so we encourage anyone interested to prepare a strong application.
Is there an age limit?
Yes. Applicants must be 22–40 years old, citizens of Uzbekistan, and hold at least a bachelor’s degree by the start of the program. Preference is given to university graduates and young professionals. The eligibility self-check on the home page of our Admission Portal lists every requirement.
What happens after my two years are up?
You join the TFU Alumni community and the global Teach For All network for life. Many Alumni continue in education (as teachers, school leaders, or curriculum coordinators), launch their own ventures and social projects, or move into other fields — corporations, government, and international organizations all value the Fellowship experience.
About the selection process
What are the stages of selection?
Three stages: (1) Online Application, including a phone interview; (2) an in-person Assessment Center in Tashkent or the regions; (3) the five-week Summer Institute. See the Selection Process page for the full roadmap.
What happens at the Assessment Center?
Through group activities and real-world simulations, we assess intellectual depth, emotional intelligence, collaboration, moral reasoning, and teaching potential.
Do I get to choose which region or school I’m placed in?
Placement is matched to where the need is greatest, based on the current program regions. If you have a preference, we will consider your choice.
About teaching conditions
Is the Fellowship paid?
Yes. Fellows receive a monthly stipend of approximately 10 million UZS.
What training and support do I get?
The five-week Summer Institute before placement, plus ongoing support throughout the school year: a dedicated regional coordinator, regular classroom observation and feedback, thematic workshops, and a digital platform for continuous professional development.
Can I continue other work or studies while I’m a Fellow?
No — the Fellowship is a full two-year commitment to teaching in your placement school.
Where will I work as a Fellow?
Fellows work in one of the program regions of Uzbekistan (currently Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya and Karakalpakstan; expansion is planned).
